Alopacia Areata is a condition characterized by patches of hair loss. They are round shaped about the size of a coin and occur unexpectedly and re-growth of hair can also happen without any need for intervention. Normally these patches get cured automatically but to achieve quick re-growth of hair, a physician can administer Minoxidil or steroid injections every month. Minoxidil is available without prescription in the market in the brand name ‘Rogaine.’ Rogaine is applied to the scalp and can be used by both men and women. Another drug is Finasteride, which has a brand name of ‘Propecia’ is available only with prescription. It is in the form of pills and only men can take it. Women must not take Propecia. The results can be felt only after 6 months in both these medicines.
